Today I was in the neighborhood so I finally went by the house used in the movie. I was amazed at how it still looked like it did in the move. All these years later, there could have been so many changes made, but it's still as it was, altho some of its land has obviously been sold off to make room for more mansions. Wish I could have seen Vivian Pickles come out of it!

I ran outside to the car barefoot, I ran thru a section of grass that was overgrown and still wet with dew. By the time i finally made it to the car and back, my dew soaked feet were ornated with the fallen petals blowing down from all of the flowering fruit trees on our street. Somehow, in its simplicity, it surprised me, and made me very very happy!

In the scene where Harold and Maude are at the amusement park and playing with the model train, in the first scene the guy with the long beard is director Hal Ashby (who has mysteriously disappeared in the next scene with the model trains. (Thanks to Steve Coleman and Gayle.

I always knew that beard-y guy had to either be the writer or the director. I've said that every time I watched the movie, since about the second time I saw it.. (1989?) finally vindicated! :) geek and proud..

Cat Stephens Denied Entry to U.S. (I can't believe this!)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The former pop singer Cat Stevens (news), now known as Yusuf Islam, was denied entry to the United States and his flight from London was diverted to Maine, after his name turned up on a watch list, a U.S. transportation security official said.

United Flight 919 enroute to Washington was diverted to Bangor where Islam was questioned and detained by federal authorities who planned to put him on a return flight early Wednesday, the official said.

U.S. Customs and border protection authorities discovered that the name matched a federal watch list by checking passenger information transmitted by the airline after the flight departed from London, the official said.

The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the event reported that Islam, whose name is listed as "Usef Islam," is on several government watch lists, including the no-fly list.

United Airlines spokesman Jeff Green said the carrier was asked by the Transportation Security Administration to divert the plane to Maine for security reasons.

The TSA had the flight diverted to Maine to keep it out of the Northeast corridor airspace, TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said.

The flight, with the remaining passengers, departed for Dulles International Airport after about four hours on the ground and landed at Dulles around 9 p.m., Melendez said.

Cat Stevens had a string of pop hits in the early 1970s including "Moonshadow" and "Wild World" before converting to Islam in late 1977.

********************************************************************

What do you think Maude (and Harold) would have made of this?!?!?!? Cat Stephens (or Yusuf Islam) a threat to National Security?????!!!!????

Just spotted this today when I was going through my copy of American Theatre magazine that the Paper Mill Playhouse in Milburn, NJ will be doing "Harold and Maude: The Musical" from Jan. 5th thru Feb. 13, 2005. Here's the link on the Theatre's site:
Exploration of themes

I first saw Harold and Maude when I was 17 and feeling a lot like Harold- a bit depressed, thinking about death a lot (more afraid of it than seeking it out, unlike him), and questioning what this crazy world was all about! That movie rocked my world! I found it so beautiful that Maude was so filled with life, and able to embrace both the dark and light sides of human existance. She didn't think Harold was crazy or weird because of his death fixation- she understood him. She knew that the understand the beauty of everything, you must understand the cycles of life, life, death, rebirth. Creation and destrcution.
Does anyone have any philosophical interpretations of this movie? Mine are basically stated above- Harold was backing away from life and Maude taught him how to embrace it all. He was looking to be reborn (ie- sticking his head through the vagina wood statue, wanting to be born all over again), and through Maude's death, she was reborn in him. There are a lot of life, death and rebirth themes in this movie- with Maudes death and Harold playing her song and throwing away his death phase (crashing his hearse), embracing "life."
I think this movie is HIGHLY profound and had a deep effect on my life. I hate when I show it to people and they merely think it's a comedy. It's SO much more than that.
Other themes I've noticed is the depiction of authority and societial figures- religion, law and psychology- poking fun at anything organized and stuffy, further emphasizing that individuality is where it's AT!
I would love to explore more with everyone, give me your input!

soundtrack?

does anyone have it? most people think that it doesn't exist - but i recently found a photo of the album, that was released in japan only, and it was in fact the soundtrack to the movie, with the picture on the cover and everything. it was obviously in vinyl - who knows, maybe 8 track too.
but i'd love to see it - at lease a picture of it, from someone here in the states.
i would then have to drive to you someday, and see it for real.

But I love Harold and Maude. I had seen the movie when I was in high school, but recently started thinking about it again. It has been a source of great enjoyment for me, and I'm glad too find other people who share my joy in this movie.

I just posted this on the geocities site guestbook:

(from the archive, re: the Dreyfuss reference- he had written from prison on Devil's Island about "seeing the most beautiful birds")
>She is addressing Harold's unspoken question about her experiences in the concentration camp. She is really talking about HERSELF and the attitude that she brought to the concentration camp. "Later on, HE realized that they had only been seagulls. But TO ME they will always be glorious birds." Seagulls are a symbol of freedom and she is telling Harold that she was able to keep her mind free and joyous even in the worst circumstances. -- Gayle

(my response)
To this I would add that she was saying that *after* the horrible experience, instead of allowing a pradigm shift back to mundane ways of thinking - trying to put it all out of mind forever, as many do - she has taken the things she appreciated, those few precious positive things that her spirit demanded that she glean from the experience, and kept them warm and bright within her heart, for the rest of her life. -- jvol
